How To: Make areas visually altered upon selection.

There must be a way to enable (buttons?) areas where upon clicking the text, that area is visually different.  Whether highlighted or in bold or underlined.  Showing a selection of a particular group of words in a list.

Example:
Clean/Wash/Repair/Repaint-Restain

I want to be able to click the word 'Clean' to make it look like 'Clean' or 'Clean' or 'Clean' vice versa.  Please help me figure out how to make these buttons for my form!  I know there are options where a person can just go into tools and choose to highlight for example, but many of the managers I have on-site at different locations know less than me about Adobe software and may or may not have color printers!

Thank you - I unfortunately do not know computer speak.  Also I have Adobe 9, if that helps one describe steps.
