Deleting Old Catalogues and Files

I have just moved my years worth of images off my laptop by exporting the catalogue throught Lightroom and everything that goes with it to a exteranl drive.

Now I would like to delete the catalogue and all files associated with it.

Do I need to do that through Lightroom or can I just delete the year 2012 in the pictures folder.
