Ungroup not available after Pathfinder/Divide = ??

Hello:                                                                                                      Level: New Newbie  OS: Windows 7 Home 64bit

The idea:

Draw a Triangle > remove middle anchors > extend the top anchor so that the shape becomes like that of a needle of a compass

Draw a line down the center > use align tool

Now, here is where I am having trouble:

Open the Pathfinder > (to split needle in 1/2) > Ungroup the resultant shape > Fill left one color Fill right an other

So, how is it that one ought to be able to Ungroup something that doesn't seem to have been Grouped in the first place? The Divide under Pathfinder doesn't appear to generate a (new) "resultant" shape /nor does it seem to generate one object of the Line & Triangle.

On that note ... I went ahead and Grouped the Line w/the extended Triangle and then followed the rest as is ... but Nope ... still the Ungroup is not available after the Divide action

I looked under Object for an option to replace the Divide but didn't have any luck ... at least to what mere logic had avaiable for me

It seems like Object > Path ought to have a useful tool for what I need ... but oh well

I am actually wondering if I need to go about doing the Divide at all. Do you think I could just put the Line in the center of the Triangle and then Group them and then just Fill the right side w/one color and the left w/an other? Or is the idea of the Divide allow for the dual coloring w/in one object?

Sorry if I am asking about the obvious. Just trying to learn.

BTW is there an online manual (for Newbies)?

Thank you so very much for reading my rambles

Have a great day/night

Kara
