Compositing in CS5

Hi

I am doing a studio shoot that involves  :

1) Shooting some white cutout wooden lettering hanging in front of a pale blue wall ( and casting soft shadows which I want to retain)

2) Using the same pale blue wall I shall be shooting some models (mainly children) and similar lighting so I expect soft shadows.

These two shots need to be composited together so that the lettering appears above the pictures of the kids.

Did a quick test yesterday and it isn't going to be easy.

There always is a "bump" where one image is placed above the other.

Feathering the edges just doesn't do the trick I'm afraid  and trying to match the levels of one image to the other is just producing some strange results.

I am sure that I have heard of a work flow process for doing this (involving blending modes perhaps ?) but can't think what it is.

Anybody out there who has successfully tackled this sort of problem ? Be glad to hear some words of advice.
